Welcome to For the Good Life

“The greatest wealth is health.” — Virgil

When good health is missing, almost every part of life is affected. It becomes harder to think clearly, work productively, enjoy time with family, pursue your dreams, and appreciate life’s everyday blessings. Good health is not simply the absence of disease—it is the foundation upon which a fulfilling life is built.

Unfortunately, despite remarkable advances in modern medicine, many people are living longer but not necessarily healthier. According to the Social Progress Index, which evaluates the well-being of 170 countries using dozens of health and quality-of-life indicators, the United States ranks only 35th in nutrition and basic medical care and 40th in overall health. These sobering statistics remind us that better healthcare alone is not enough. We must also embrace healthier ways of living.

The encouraging news is that achieving better health doesn’t always require expensive gym memberships, complicated diet plans, or the latest wellness fad. Small, consistent lifestyle choices—grounded in sound scientific evidence—can have a profound impact on our health, longevity, and quality of life.

Why I Created This Website

For nearly five decades, I had the privilege of serving as a physician in both Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine. I witnessed countless stories of suffering, healing, resilience, and hope. Every day reinforced a simple truth: many of the illnesses that fill our hospitals can be prevented—or their impact greatly reduced—through healthier lifestyle choices made long before disease develops.

Then life placed me on the other side of the examination table.

As an octogenarian, I have experienced healthcare not only as a physician but also as a patient. I have faced Stage IV thyroid cancer, undergone multiple surgeries, including quadruple coronary bypass surgery, and learned firsthand the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges that accompany serious illness. Those experiences have deepened my appreciation for modern medicine while reinforcing my conviction that prevention remains our most powerful form of healthcare.

My interest in wellness actually began long before I entered medical school. Throughout my career, I remained fascinated by the science of healthy living, nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention. Retirement has given me the opportunity to devote more time to studying these subjects and, more importantly, to sharing what I have learned through years of medical practice, personal experience, and evidence-based research.

What You’ll Find Here

For the Good Life is more than a health blog.

It is a place where medical science meets practical living.

Here you’ll discover evidence-based articles on healthy aging, lifestyle medicine, nutrition, fitness, disease prevention, and longevity. I’ll also share inspiring stories, personal reflections, and lessons I’ve learned—from both my patients and my own journey—that I hope will encourage you to live with greater health, purpose, and hope.

Whether you are in your twenties seeking to build lifelong healthy habits or in your eighties striving to maintain vitality and independence, I believe it’s never too early—or too late—to make choices that improve your health and enrich your life.

My Hope for You

My hope is that this website will empower you to become an active partner in your own health. The best healthcare is not simply treating disease after it appears, but preventing it whenever possible and maximizing our body’s remarkable capacity to heal when illness does occur.

After all, the goal is not merely to add years to life—but to add life to those years.

Thank you for visiting For the Good Life. I invite you to join me on this lifelong journey toward healthier living, wiser choices, and a richer, more meaningful life.
