When I was in college, wandering through the bustling streets of Manila, I stumbled upon three second-hand books at a street-side bookstand. Little did I know that these tattered treasures would shape my life more profoundly than any course I ever took in school.

The first was Dale Carnegie‘s “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living,” a timeless guide to letting go of fears and embracing the present. The second, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale‘s “The Power of Positive Thinking,” opened my eyes to the incredible strength of a positive mindset. Finally, Zig Ziglar‘s “See You at the Top” inspired me to aim higher, dream bigger, and climb life’s ladder with courage and determination.

These books became my silent mentors, teaching me how to navigate life’s twists and turns with resilience, optimism, and faith. They instilled in me a belief that no matter the challenges we face, our mindset can transform obstacles into opportunities and struggles into steppingstones.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through the years is that resilience goes a long way in shaping a truly happy life. It’s not just about surviving tough moments but thriving despite them. Even in the simplest, everyday situations, resilience can make all the difference. For instance, imagine driving down the road when another driver recklessly cuts ahead of you. Instead of reacting with rage and frustration, you can take a step back and say, “What a pity this person is so careless. I’m thankful I know better and can choose to stay safe.” That moment of calm and control doesn’t just protect your peace—it strengthens your sense of gratitude.

I’ve had my own share of personal health setbacks, moments when it would’ve been easy to spiral into self-pity. Instead of ruminating on my misfortune, I chose to be thankful that I was still alive, still able to make better choices, and still capable of learning from my missteps. These moments taught me that no matter how difficult life gets, we always have the power to respond with gratitude, hope, and action.

A positive attitude is, without a doubt, the most important foundation for every aspect of life. It gives us the strength to face adversity, the wisdom to appreciate the little joys, and the courage to keep moving forward. Life’s journey is not always smooth, but when we face it with resilience and positivity, we find meaning and excitement in every twist and turn.
