A Life Well-Lived: My Psalm of Purpose and Gratitude

Laurence Tabanao Gayao

Life is a precious gift, one that must be lived with purpose and intention. As I journey through its seasons, I’ve come to realize that every moment is an opportunity to grow, learn, and embrace the richness of existence. This is my psalm of life—a reflection on the core values and beliefs that guide me as I seek to live fully and meaningfully.

Praise for Life’s Wonders
I give thanks for the beauty that surrounds me, for the miracle of each breath and heartbeat. The grandeur of nature—towering trees, the gentle rustling of leaves, the soothing song of birds—reminds me of the Creator’s hand in everything. Even the smallest things, like the warmth of the sun or a cool breeze, are reasons for gratitude.

Life is a tapestry, woven with threads of joy, sorrow, love, and struggle. Yet, it’s the contrast between these that makes life meaningful. I praise not only the moments of happiness but also the challenges that shape and strengthen my spirit.

The Call to Purpose
Life is not simply to be lived; it is to be lived with purpose. I believe I was created for more than just passing time. Each day offers a chance to touch someone’s life, to offer a kind word, a helping hand, or a moment of encouragement. I strive to be a vessel of light, bringing hope and healing to those around me.

I’ve spent my life as a physician, but more than treating illness, I’ve been called to promote wholeness—physical, mental, and spiritual. This calling doesn’t end with retirement or age. The wisdom I’ve gained over the years is something I must pass on, a legacy for future generations.

The Power of Resilience
Life’s trials are inevitable, yet it’s in overcoming them that we find our true strength. From personal experiences—like witnessing dementia’s impact on loved ones or facing my own health challenges—I’ve learned the power of resilience. We are not defined by our struggles but by how we rise from them.

I reflect on the people who’ve inspired me with their courage in the face of adversity: patients who battled disease, family members who navigated grief, and my own son’s fight with chronic illness. Their strength becomes my strength, as I am reminded that God’s grace sustains me through every trial.

The Joy of Companionship
As life progresses, I realize more deeply the importance of companionship. I’ve been blessed with a loving wife, Edith, whose unwavering support has been my anchor. Together, we’ve weathered storms, celebrated victories, and shared in the beauty of life. Our family—children, grandchildren, and extended relatives—are constant reminders of God’s love and faithfulness.

In the broader community, through my involvement in the church, my Facebook groups, and my work, I see how connection with others uplifts and strengthens us. We were not made to walk alone. Unity in love, faith, and purpose binds us as children of God, reminding me that every relationship is a divine gift.

Stewardship of Health
Taking care of this physical body is a form of gratitude to the Creator. For me, wellness is a reflection of respect for the life I’ve been given. As I advance in years, I strive to stay active, to nourish my body with healthy foods, and to care for my mental and spiritual well-being.

My journey in advocating for a plant-based lifestyle for my son has only deepened my understanding of how interconnected our health is with our choices. It is not just about extending life but about living it with vitality and energy, so that I may continue serving those around me.

The Eternal Hope
My psalm of life doesn’t end with this earthly existence. I know that this life is a prelude to something far greater. As a believer in Christ, I have the assurance of eternal life, where the limitations and pains of this world will fade away. This hope gives me peace and the strength to continue forward, no matter what may come.

Life is fleeting, but its impact ripples into eternity. I seek to leave behind a legacy of love, faith, and service, knowing that my story is part of a grander narrative written by God. And with each new day, I rejoice, for life—despite its impermanence—is truly a gift to be cherished.

This is my psalm of life—a celebration of existence, a call to purpose, and a testament to the enduring hope I have in the God who gave me this precious gift.
