Laurence Tabanao Gayao

Vacations are wonderful and enriching experience, filled with a variety of activities, good food, and the company of friends and family. This is more so on my vacations to the land of my birth the Philippines.

In the Philippines, celebrations and social gatherings are indeed characterized by an abundance of delicious food. This tradition reflects the country’s rich culinary heritage and the cultural importance placed on hospitality and communal dining. Here are some key points about this aspect of Filipino culture:

Importance of Food in Filipino Celebrations

  1. Symbol of Generosity and Hospitality: In Filipino culture, offering a wide variety of food is a way of showing generosity and making guests feel welcome. The host’s effort in preparing an abundant feast is seen as a sign of respect and affection towards their guests.
  2. Family and Community Bonding: Meals are central to social gatherings, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together, share stories, and strengthen bonds.
  3. Culinary Diversity: Filipino cuisine is diverse, incorporating influences from Malay, Spanish, Chinese, and American culinary traditions. Celebrations often feature a mix of traditional and contemporary dishes.

Some has said, “Among Filipinos life is a party interrupted by short periods of work.” It’s easy to see how such a trips could contribute to weight gain due to the combination of frequent dining out and the joy of indulging in local delicacies. Here’s a breakdown of the factors that likely plays into our weight gain during these trips:

Key Factors in Vacation Weight Gain

  1. Frequent Dining Out:
    • Restaurants and Banquets: Dining out often means consuming larger portions and more calorically dense foods than one might at home. Restaurant meals, especially during special occasions like university anniversaries and family gatherings, are often rich and indulgent.
    • Variety of Foods: Trying different local dishes and enjoying the hospitality of friends can lead to overeating. The variety and abundance of food in the Philippines, from continental breakfasts to local delicacies, can be irresistible.
  2. Social Eating:
    • Celebrations and Gatherings: Social events such as banquets, family dinners, and reunions typically feature ample food and drink. Eating in a social setting often leads to consuming more than usual due to the festive atmosphere and longer meal times.
    • Treating Others: As you mentioned, the cost of dining out in the Philippines is relatively low compared to the U.S., which made it easy to treat friends and family without worrying about the expense, leading to more frequent dining out.
  3. Less Structured Eating Habits:
    • Travel and Accommodation: Staying in different places, such as the motel in Luzon and your apartment in Mindanao, might disrupt regular eating routines. Continental breakfasts at hotels and meals cooked by a hired cook might be more indulgent than typical home-cooked meals.
    • Snacking and Local Treats: Vacation often comes with the temptation of snacking on local treats and delicacies throughout the day, adding extra calories.
  4. Reduced Physical Activity:
    • While your trip was packed with activities, vacations often mean a break from regular exercise routines. Even with sightseeing and other activities, the physical exertion might not match your regular fitness regimen back home.

I came out of medical school in 1971 and after residency in Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health and Science Center I practiced for forty over years traditional medicine in the specialties of family and later in emergency medicine. All along I accept being called a health care provider. Most of what I did however was acute intervention of the results of illnesses that were mostly brought about by an unhealthy life styles. If the patient had high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, congestive heart failure, and other illnesses I prescribed them medications and mentioned that they needed to loss weight and exercise, in a perfunctory manner. Patients kept on coming back mostly getting worse with time. There was no systematic effort to alter the life styles that lead to these problems.Early in my career I studied on my own exercise physiology and nutrition, and diligently applied it till I got too busy in my profession and I gradually gained weight and eventually had elevated blood sugar and hypertension just like most of my patients. I after retirement I got back into the fitness program and delved into study of life style induced illnesses. It has made me realize as expensive and highly technologically advance our health care is, it has basically is neglecting promoting health as evidenced by the fact we in the US have the highest per capita expenditure for healthcare but our life expectancy is among the lowest among developed countries. Health business is misdirected in its focus and it is one of the largest industries in the US, good for profit for providers but bad for consumers. I now desire to share as much as possible the gospel of a healthy life style which is the key health and happiness.
