Cheers to 2024 indeed! It’s remarkable to witness the demographic shifts and milestones, especially as the baby boomer generation enters the stage of turning 65. Congratulations on approaching the milestone. I however would be 78 years old and soon joining the octogenarian group. For me it is a privilege of reaching this age, despite the loss of a good number of contemporaries, friends, and relatives, it reflects the wisdom I gained through a life well-lived.
Yes, if you’re planning to not to get old this article is definitely not for you. What is the alternative of not getting old? Well, we all know it, die young. The concept of not getting old and the alternative is to die young is indeed a straightforward way of looking at aging. I am reminded of one of my smart aleck kid, was told by my wife to eat more vegetables to make him grow big and strong. He didn’t like greens, and retorted back, “I eat my way and I will die my way.” I have no idea where he got that idea, must be from watching cartoons on TV.
The humorous anecdote about my smart aleck kid and his response to eating vegetables is quite amusing. It seems like he had a strong-willed perspective on life even at a young age.
While aging is a natural part of life, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, can contribute to overall well-being as one grows older. Embracing the aging process and finding joy in the experiences it brings is a positive approach.
Retiring from a full-time career in Emergency Medicine have brought about significant changes in my lifestyle. I am thankful I recognized the importance of prioritizing my health and well-being by focusing on adequate sleep, avoiding certain foods, and engaging in regular exercise.
The initial challenges I faced after retirement starting a fitness program was having shortness of breath and dizziness on walking a short distance, so I had to rest then walk, This improved after a few weeks. This highlight the importance of gradually easing into a new exercise routine, especially after a period of reduced physical activity. It’s great tell you that I improved over time and that my spouse, Edith, joined me in the journey by deciding to join the gym together. Physical activity, along with a supportive environment, can contribute positively to overall health.
In 1976 I was diagnose with thyroid follicular carcinoma and the subsequent challenges I faced with metastatic recurrence. It’s encouraging to let you know that advancements in technology played a crucial role in my diagnosis and treatment.
The use of focused radiation therapy to address metastases in my clavicle and spine demonstrates the effectiveness of modern medical approaches. It’s heartening that these treatments were successful in managing and addressing the cancer.
Medical technology has indeed evolved over the years, allowing for more precise diagnostics and targeted treatments. for others facing similar challenges.
It’s truly fortunate that I had access to the cutting-edge healthcare technology and advanced research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Institutions like UT Southwestern, with their focus on evidence-based medical innovations, play a pivotal role in pushing the boundaries of medical knowledge and treatment options.
Being a beneficiary of such advancements not only highlights the progress in healthcare but also emphasizes the importance of institutions dedicated to research and the application of innovative medical practices. It’s a testament to the collaborative efforts of medical professionals and researchers working towards improving patient outcomes.
As a doctor, I continued to learn and adapt, especially after undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Navigating the process of recovery and understanding new medications is indeed a significant aspect of post-surgery care.
I recognize that the medical system, like any other human endeavor, is not perfect highlights the challenges inherent in healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of these challenges by offering data-driven insights, improving diagnostics, and optimizing treatment plans. However, we should be aware the effective utilization of AI in healthcare requires a sound understanding of how to use and interpret the technology.
The integration of AI into medical practice is an ongoing process, and the collaboration between healthcare professionals and technology is crucial.
While I am recovering from heart surgery I was advised to limit my activities outside our home. This gave me a chance analyze how YouTube uses artificial intelligence to chose videos that would go viral that could earn them more money generated through advertising. So I created a video targeting the Filipinos as a group, titled “Why Filipino Love Motorcycles”. I observed whenever I visited the Philippines there were more motorcycles than cars on the roads. I also rode motorcycles since mid 1960’s as a pre medical and medical student in Manila for 6 years and later owned a Harley Davidson and a Kawasaki motorcycles after I immigrated to Texas over 50 years ago. So far the video on its 13th day after release have been seen by 17 k viewers.
Absolutely! Embracing lifelong learning and staying open to innovations can significantly enhance the quality of life as we age. The prospect of self-driving cars and voice-activated robotic caregivers is indeed fascinating. These advancements have the potential to make daily tasks more convenient and provide additional support, especially for individuals who may require assistance.
Continuous physical and mental well-being is crucial in preparing for and adapting to such technological advancements. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities that the future holds for improving the aging experience through innovative technologies.
